Splatterhouse is combat-oriented with main character Rick fighting various monsters in either hand-to-hand combat or with makeshift weapons, such as wooden planks and meat cleavers. The titular "Splatterhouse" is called the West Mansion, the residence of a brilliant Dr. West, who was rumored to have some secret experiments before his mysterious death. Since he was a world-renowned authority of the field, Rick and Jennifer traveled to West Mansion for research. Rick's mask is said to be a legendary ancient artifact which contains a sentient spirit that grants the user supernatural powers, and was also given a name (which was kept for the immediate sequels). Rick first fights to save Jennifer, who has been kidnapped by an entity known as the Evil One, but it is revealed this was only a distraction while the Evil One took David. Rick is still suffering from his guilt of being unable to save Jennifer and has been plagued by nightmares of her and the Terror Mask, which reformed after breaking at the climax of the first game. Suddenly, the mask reappears to Rick and tempts him to find the house, telling him that Jennifer can be saved. Admittedly, the style was still cartoony, much like Ghosts ‘N Goblins was, but the larger-than-life violence and sprays of claret made it feel more like something out of EC Comics, the infamous publisher whose output was considered so corrupting that it hastened the birth of the Comics Code.
